A bio-inspired swarm UAV framework integrating thermal sensing and optimization-based coordination for efficient search and rescue operations

Scientific Reports published a bio-inspired UAV swarm framework for search and rescue, combining thermal sensing, distributed coordination, and optimization methods including Particle Swarm Optimization, Grey Wolf Optimizer, and Ant Colony Optimization. The system was implemented in a PX4 and Gazebo simulation environment to compare swarm search behaviour under common mission constraints.

Why it matters: although still simulation-based, the work is directly framed around disaster response and gives a practical benchmarking structure for multi-drone search systems using thermal cues, coverage, redundancy reduction, and spatial dispersion.
