Bats Inspire Advance in Aerial Robots

Worcester Polytechnic Institute researchers developed a bat-inspired sensing and navigation system that allows palm-sized drones to move through smoke, fog, and visually degraded environments using ultrasound and lightweight onboard AI. The approach mimics echolocation strategies used by bats rather than relying on heavy lidar or camera stacks.

This is one of the more practically relevant bio-inspired navigation projects because it targets real deployment constraints: low payload capacity, limited power budgets, and degraded visibility during search-and-rescue operations. The combination of compact sensing and autonomous navigation could make small autonomous drones more viable in industrial inspection and emergency response.
