Researchers at the University of Osaka and collaborators have developed a cyborg insect system that reads heartbeat activity, neural signal features, and body movement from cockroaches.
An AI model uses those signals to infer the insect’s internal state and decide when to apply gentle stimulation.
The interesting shift is from treating the insect as a remote-controlled platform to treating it as a living sensor and participant in the control loop. That has obvious implications for search and rescue, environmental monitoring, and future bio-hybrid sensing systems.
