A few chemical cues can help rival bee groups merge

Honeybee groups carry distinct chemical signatures used to distinguish nestmates from outsiders, but those signatures change when groups are brought together. Researchers identified three ethyl esters that reduced defensive recognition behaviour and helped separate groups form a common colony identity.

The finding reveals a specific mechanism by which local chemical cues regulate membership, trust and boundary formation in a distributed social system, with direct use in practical beekeeping.
