A mathematical model of the dawn chorus shows how synchronized singing can emerge without central coordination.
Each simulated bird has its own threshold for beginning to sing, determined by increasing ambient light and the amount of nearby birdsong it hears. With sufficiently strong social interaction, those simple local rules produce a rapid population-wide transition rather than a gradual increase in singing. Spatial simulations further predict that the chorus can propagate across a landscape as a travelling wave.
