Epithelial cells spontaneously synchronize into tissue-wide pulses

Cells don’t always behave as individuals.

In sheets of epithelial cells — the tightly connected cells that line and cover much of the body — researchers have observed waves of contraction and expansion spreading through the group, a little like the stop-start compression that travels backwards through a traffic jam.

The cells are not passive: each is generating its own forces, yet neighbouring cells can fall into synchrony. In this study, that synchrony persisted longer in more malignant breast-cancer cell lines. It’s a good example of a property that only becomes visible when you stop looking at the cell and start looking at the collective.
