Listening for Collective Decisions in Sperm Whale Conversations

Researchers studying sperm whales around Dominica are beginning to connect the animals’ acoustic conversations with their subsequent collective behaviour.

In an interview explaining Project CETI’s research, network scientist Giovanni Petri describes how recordings of approximately eight to ten click sequences can help predict impending deep feeding dives. Researchers are combining hydrophones, animal-mounted sensors and network analysis to investigate how whales synchronise their movements and whether particular individuals initiate group decisions. Earlier work also documented cooperation between two family units helping a newborn calf breathe. The meanings of individual whale calls remain unresolved.
